February 5, 2021

If you ask any interior decorators, they would have only one answer to make our rooms elegant- that is curtains. But only when chosen correctly. It’s a matter of colour and fabric, length and lining. Fabric is an essential part of choosing curtains, so the first thing you should decide is which type of fabric you want.
The most common types of curtain fabric are cotton, linen, silk, polyester, velvet, acrylic, rayon, brocade, and lace.

Cotton

Cotton is a versatile fabric used to achieve a range of styles. It offers a crisp, clean feel that suits traditional or modern styles.

Silk

If you wanted luxury feeling for your interior, no hesitation, go for silk material. Silk is best chosen for its aesthetic appeal than functionality. It looks fabulously romantic in bedrooms or formal dining rooms.Silk is dry clean only and very susceptible to sun damage.

Polyester

This is a very common choice. Polyester is durable, affordable, easy to care for, and doesn’t really wrinkle, stretch or shrink. Polyester is good for living rooms and bedrooms, but not suitable for kitchen as it is flammable.

Linen

Linen is a natural fibre. Its billowy look creates an airy, casual, relaxed environment. Linen won’t block the sun, and like silk they’re dry clean only.

Velvet

Velvet gives your rooms richness and glamour. Velvet is made of either natural or synthetic fibre. It’s thick and heavy making it great for blocking out cold air, light and sound.

Acrylic

Acrylic is a light weight fabric and drapes beautifully. It has a similar texture to wool. Acrylic curtains attract and disperse moisture effortlessly, they’re hypoallergenic and resistant to mould and mildew.

Rayon

Rayon is a semi-synthetic cellulosic fibre used widely. While rayon is made from natural materials (like beech trees or bamboo), it undergoes intense chemical processing, making it a manufactured fibre. It’s soft, strong and breathable.

Brocade

Brocade is a woven fabric having a raised floral or figured design that is introduced during the weaving process. This is an elaborately woven fabric that can be used to create a sophisticated tone.

Lace

Lace curtains are very traditional and romantic, best used to provide privacy and diffuse natural light. They come in neutral shades and can be easily coordinated with other colours in the room. Some lace fabrics are dry clean only.
